I need to think of a full list, but I would def. put Method Man and Black Thought down. I don't really watch the music networks that much anymore but in all the time that I have been watching them I've seen very little coverage.
I have a few friends that are 'into hiphop' that haven't even heard of them also.
1. Special Ed - He was the Youngest in Charge Baby!!! He was a slick lil dude, his ryhmes still killin' Soldier Boy.
1. Grand Puba - Flow and Style was slaying everyone.
3. AG - Got better each time out. Ruff flows from the BRONX, Consistency thru the years.
4. AZ - His verse on Life's A Bitch and on the Pete Rock Produced "I'm Rather Unique" alone
5. Q-Tip - Style and Flavor, Timing, Cadence, Fun, and Witty
Cuz he spits hot fire. Actually because he's bringing knowledge on mulriple levels with his work but a lot of people tend to not totally grasp the depth of what he's saying. Any time you can go over people's heads and still make sense you win in my book. But it also results in major sleeping by the masses, no matter how hard you grind. He goes out on his own w/ no promo and no street team. Just Frankie and the product. People know him personally and can relate his work directly back to him because they see him on the reg, and for me that relationship w/ his audience and fanbase is a big part of what makes a great artist, not just emcees.
Aaaaand I also wanna say that I agree with lots of y'all. I see Mos mentioned and Black Thought and those are two of my personal faves. They both get looked at halfway and people say they're hot, but when you listen for real for real you hear all sorts of dope ish. Amazing artists they are.
1. Black Thought
2. Elzhi
3. Phonte
4. Blu
5. Pharoahe Monch
6. Mos Def
7. Percee P
8. Crooked I
9. AZ
10. Guilty Simpson
They're all dope, have distinct voices and styles, verses are always interesting to me. Plus they been around for a while and I feel they deserve more shine than what i feel they currently have. Hence, "slept on".
I broke the rules and put up 10. There are so many more than even ten emcees who deserve a mention. For me, its tough narrowing it down to just 5, but if I had to, the first five I've listed are MY "official" picks.
1. Talib Kweli~Hide your crops, Here comes the lyrical locusts...HURRY!
2. Mos Def~I am the world renowned, verb adjective adverb
pronoun preposition suffix prefix Original or remix, sunburst and eclipse
Me and Kwe' combine like strands on a double-helix
3. Wise Intelligent (P.R.T.) Have you heard Conscious Style? Yo, where the teachers went, with all that pro-black shit?
Where all the conscious niggas, who used to chat like this? See, I remember yesterday when y'all was Gods and Earths
Egyptians and metaphysicists on the verge of giving birth............what? You Must Learn lol!
4. Travis McCoy (G.C.H.)~What? I like this dude!
5. Fashawn~This dude can flow and tell a story....Fresh Music!
Honestly, this was a hard list to come up with.
